December’s here, and the new year is just around the corner. If you haven’t done so already, there’s still time to put together your goals for the coming year and your strategies to make those goals a reality. Without a plan, your marketing runs the risk of just “happening” to you. That’s if it happens at all.

The trick with setting goals is that they should be attainable, measurable and have a date for completion. If your goals are fuzzy or unrealistic it’s easy to feel like you’re not making any progress and give up.

A typical plan also addresses your current situation, your business’ strengths and weakness, opportunities and threats. It should also include details about your audience and competition. With your plan down on paper, you can create a sensible budget and marketing calendar.

Having a written plan in place helps you in several ways. First, you’ll know what needs to be done and when. That helps to avoid scrambling and missed opportunities. It also helps to keep you focused and avoid spending money in a haphazard manner. Ideally, your plan will also have a method for tracking results. Over time, you’ll know what works for your business and what doesn’t.

If putting your marketing plan together seems a bit overwhelming, or you don’t know where to start, give Dean or Neil a call or shoot out an email. They’ll take the mystery out of the process and help you make 2008 a great year.
